It’s been 30 years since Terry Fox began his cross-country Marathon of Hope in aid of cancer research and awareness.
Among the communities across the country honouring his memory each year since with the Terry Fox Run is the Town of St. George’s.
About three dozen people participated in this year’s run, which took place on Sept. 19.
“The weather co-operated and the parade was a big success,” said Goldi Hallett, event chair. “After the run, the walkers met at the stadium, where our newly-donated Terry Fox flag was raised.”
The flag came from the Terry Fox Foundation, which provides grants for cancer research and continues to promote Terry’s legacy with such events as the Terry Fox Run and the Terry Fox Great Canadian Hair Do.

“Games were played for the youth and a lovely lunch was served inside the stadium,” added Ms. Hallett. “That’s something we hadn’t done before, but this year was special because of the anniversary.”
Ms. Hollett was very thankful for all the participants and supporters of this year’s run. Participants collected $1,474 this year, and along with a $570 private donation from a local family, a grand total of $2,044 was raised in Terry’s memory.
The Terry Fox Foundation website estimates almost $500 million has been raised worldwide to date for cancer research in Terry's name.
