Stephenville Councillor Michael Tobin, chair of the Hillside Interfaith Cemetery Committee, said there are a lot of misconceptions about new rules and regulations for the cemetery.
He told council members at their recent regular general meeting that despite sending out thousands of flyers out to households in Stephenville and Kippens outlining the rules and regulations, there seems to be a lot of confusion about it and they’ve received numerous calls.
Councillor Tobin said they would not be removing any concrete, metal or wooden forms currently at the cemetery, only in instances where they are deteriorated. The rule simply states that no replacement of these forms will be permitted.
In regards to the limit of flowers and other tributes placed on graves, there is a limit of one per grave; and for maintenance purposes, plants, shrubs, ornaments, stones, seats and other items are not permitted and will be removed.
“But in saying that, these items would only be removed if they interfere with maintenance of the cemetery,” the councillor stressed.
He said the committee’s aim is simply to have a well-cared for and well maintained cemetery and he hopes families who have loved ones there abide by the rules and regulations to make the job of the caretakers easier.
