A 51-year-old West Bay woman was arrested on Feb. 17 for possessing 11,200 contraband cigarettes, under the Excise Act 2001 and the Revenue Administration Act of Newfoundland and Labrador.
The tobacco was seized from a vehicle in the community Lourdes as part of information received by the members involved in the investigation.
RCMP Border Integrity Unit of Corner Brook along with assistance from the Corner Brook Drug section entered into an investigation involving contraband tobacco products being shipped from Ontario to Newfoundland and Labrador.
The woman was released and is scheduled to appear in Stephenville Provincial Court on May 7.
Police say the purchase and sale of contraband tobacco products contributes to organized crime. They ask people help keep their communities safe by reporting illegal activities to their local police detachment or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
NOTE: An earlier version of this story stated the tobacco had been shipped via Canada Post.
