The town of Kippens kicked off its recent Winter Carnival with an official cake cutting ceremony at the Kippens Community Centre. Mayor Cator Best, Councillors Brian Roberts, Heather Shears, and Leon Benoit were away attending municipal affairs meetings in Corner Brook; however, Port au Port MHA Tony Cornect and town councillor Debbie Brake-Patton were on hand to welcome residents and guests to the carnival. Councillor Brake-Patton remarked on the great turnout for the festival noting that nearly three hundred people were served breakfast, many of whom were from the outlying area. She joked about how good it was to have so many visiting Kippens hoping many would move into the community. She praised organizers who had worked hard to make a success of each event. Mr. Cornect spoke briefly, thanking organizers and sponsors, and invited people to come watch him skate at the Stephenville Dome, the venue for the free community skate for Kippens Winter Carnival button wearers. Mr. Cornect alluded to the bingo game which was to follow the cake cutting ceremony saying he was sure people were anxious to start the game. He wrapped up his remarks by quoting the slogan for the festival: “Come on people and join the fun. Kippens Carnival 2011 is for everyone.” The slogan was written by Danielle Evans, winner of the slogan contest, who was also on hand to help cut the cake. The cake cutting was followed by a bingo game for adults while the children were treated to fun and games followed by hot chocolate and cookies at the Kippens Recreation Field. Later in the day the carnival went to the dogs - a dog show was held at the community centre with a variety of canines vying for top prize. There were no losers at this contest as doggie treats were liberally handed out. The day finished off with a dance at the Silver Dollar Lounge. On Sunday events included an adults only card game, cross-country skiing, community skating and community swims. The carnival wrapped up with a seniors dance at the Kippens Community Centre in the evening. -- Photos and text by Carol Hopkins
