Stephenville’s Bryan Downey scored Mount Allison University’s Athlete of the Week award last week for his performance at a recent Atlantic Colleges Athletic Association badminton invitational held in Sackville, NS.
He went undefeated on Jan. 15, beating all of his opponents from Université Ste. Anne, Crandall University, University of Kings College, and Holland College.
He won three straight matches in men’s singles, and paired up with fellow Mountie Brian Stewart to also take six consecutive game victories in the men’s doubles.
A resident of Stephenville, Bryan was a school Athlete of the Year twice, and is a former MVP in both soccer and volleyball with Stephenville High School.
A badminton player since fifth grade, Downey was also a member of the Stephenville Junior Badminton Club and a player with the Newfoundland provincial team.
He was recognized as the Newfoundland Player of Year in 2006, 2008, and 2009, and as well was chosen as Athlete of the Year for the Town of Stephenville in 2007.
Bryan is currently enrolled in second year Arts and hopes to pursue a career in foreign affairs.
