There were some big wins for Stephenville Junior Badminton Club at the recent Atlantic Junior/ Juvenile/ Under 14 Badminton Championships in Summerside, P.E.I.

William Forsey, David Alexander, Emily Alexander and Jillian Forsey attended the event along with other athletes from Newfoundland and Labrador.

Emily scored the Atlantic Juvenile Champion title after defeating two competitors from New Brunswick.

Emily was pushed hard in the semi-finals match by Maggie Gunter of New Brunswick, a determined competitor. She hung in for the win, defeating Maggie 22-20, 21-18.

She then faced Sneha Desi from New Brunswick in the finals and won in three games, 21-17, 17-21, 21-12. While the match went to three games, by the third game Emily’s strength and experience was too much for her competition and she cruised to an easy win.

In juvenile girl’s doubles, Emily and Jillian paired up and successfully captured the girl’s doubles consolation title.

In mixed doubles, Emily partnered with Jocelyn Cormier of New Brunswick to capture the mixed doubles title. They went through the entire tournament without giving up a game and stayed true to form with a convincing win over Glen Gong and Maggie Gunter, with scores of 21-18, 21-10.

Jillian and Isaac Davis Power, also of Newfoundland and Labrador, advanced to the semi-finals before losing out to the finalists.

In the junior (Under 19) division, David advanced as far as the quarter finals, while William made it to the consolation finals before being defeated.

Successful season

This event marked the near end to a very busy and successful badminton season for these individuals.

In Late February, both Emily and David competed in badminton at the Canada Games in Nova Scotia. In March, both competed at the Provincial Championships in Conception Bay South. Emily successfully won gold in all three events and David captured a bronze medal in singles and a gold medal in mixed doubles with Emily.

The last big badminton event for these four athletes will be the High School Provincial Championships to be held in Stephenville from May 6 to 7. Their school is the defending Provincial High School Champions and they hope to play a big role in helping their school retain that title.
