The setting might be a small-town saloon, but “Headin’ West” is big on musical talent.

Stephenville Theatre Festival has drawn impressive crowds during the past few years with their country music shows, and this year’s production could quite easily be the best so far.

The music is contemporary, with the likes of Travis Tritt, Miranda Lambert, Jane Dear Girls and Lady Antebellum featured during the two-act show.

This style of music seems particularly suited to the performers and their onstage camaraderie and enthusiasm ripple through the audience right from the get-go.

Leading on vocals are Jennifer Dawson Hobbs, Trevor Hinks, Mallory Johnson and Jeff Sullivan on vocals; while David Bennett, Roy Berti, Evan Smith, Bill Simms and Gavin Tucker form the show’s band.

Each performer has their moment to shine and there are also several songs where everybody takes part – which really gives “Headin’ West” a definite sense of synergy.

Adding to the liveliness is Jeff Sullivan’s double-duty as show host. His banter with fellow performers and the audience draws quite a few laughs throughout the show and helps keep things moving along at a good pace.

“Headin’ West” takes place at the Arts and Culture Centre’s Stage II venue. That, along with a simple yet effective set, helps create the show’s intimate and informal feel. Costumes look modern and relaxed – and thankfully don’t cross the line into Howdy Doody and Buffalo Bob territory.

Audience members might want to arrive early in order to pick their ideal seats. While views of the stage are good from nearly any angle, the show tends to be a bit loud – so sitting next to a speaker might not be to everyone’s taste.

If you enjoy country music performed live, then “Headin’ West” is sure to please. The show runs again on July 29, Aug. 2, 6 and 12.

Outstanding show! Everyone should get out to see it. The talent of these performers and the exciting vibe in the room from the audience is not to be missed. My husband and I will be seeing it again before the season ends.
