After having seven cats dropped off at the Bay St. George Animal Shelter in two days, shelter manager Gwen Samms is warning that dumping animals is illegal and offenders will be prosecuted.
The most recent incidents involved three kittens abandoned in boxes and left out in the cold near the shelter. While the three animals – named Shiloh, Sonny and Patches by shelter staff – are now safe in foster homes, Ms. Samms said they have no more room at the shelter and all their foster homes are full, as well.
“We (Society for the Care and Protection of Animals) would love to take in every animal but we have a limit on how many we’re allowed to take in at our small no kill/no cage shelter at one time,” she said.
They cannot risk the safety of the animals or the closure of the shelter because of overcrowding.
Because of their situation, Ms. Samms said anyone caught abandoning animals at the shelter without permission will be charged. Cameras are being installed at the location.
Ms. Samms said volunteers will do whatever they can to help animals in need but they can’t bring every animal into the shelter.
Her plea is not to drop off animals without permission and for owner to get their pets spayed or neutered to assist in keeping the pet population down.
In addition to the cameras being installed, the society is now trying to raise finances for the purchase of additional cameras.
