Education Week celebrations kicked off on Monday with an interactive webcast that linked schools throughout the island and Labrador.
Joan Burke, education minister, joined five students at Stephenville High School to welcome the province-wide audience, stating the interactive broadcast was a good example of how technology can connect students with one another.
“It also demonstrates that technology is being used to enhance teaching and learning in our classrooms in the 21st century,” said Minister Burke. “The provincial government is working very hard to create an education system where every student has the opportunity to learn, grow and succeed to their very best of their ability.”
The minister signed a proclamation designating March 6 to 12 as Education Week, while Lily Cole, president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers’ Association signed another copy the proclamation from her office in St. John’s.
Ms. Cole noted the theme for the celebrations was, “I Think. I Can. – iThink. iCan. Penser, c'est pouvoir. – iPenser. iPouvoir.”
Among the other schools participating in the webcast were the Brother Rice Junior High choir from St. John’s, and students from Henry Gordon Academy in Cartwright and H.L. Strong Academy in Little Bay Islands.
