A 55-year-old man is dead after falling overboard from a boat near Heatherton.
The man was in a dory about two kilometres offshore on Tuesday morning, when he was seen falling overboard by his son who was watching from land.
A short search ensued, and the man’s body was recovered from the water at about 12:30 p.m.
After seeing his father fall into the water, the son reported the incident to RCMP and the police called the Marine Rescue Sub Center in St. John’s.
The center dispatched a cormorant helicopter from Gander, the Canadian Coast Guard vessel Cape Fox and co-ordinated local search and rescue efforts.
While these resources were being deployed, the son also alerted local boat owners and several of them set out immediately to look for the man.
The man was found shortly after the cormorant arrived in the area, he was transported to a waiting ambulance and taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
