Stephenville High School honours academic best

Stephenville High’s brightest minds were honoured at the school’s sixth annual year-end academic awards ceremony on June 24. (Click here for slideshow.)

“We honour you, the students, on your accomplishments,” said MHA Tony Cornect, the event’s guest speaker, noting the students were just beginning a lifetime of learning and achieving personal goals.

Grade 12 student Lauren Henley was honoured with the Byrnes Shoes Senior Student of the Year Award, which was based on academic, personal and teamwork qualities demonstrated throughout their high school career and highlighted in their final year at the school. Lauren was also named winner of the High School Volunteer Award.

Rebecca Roberts won the David LaVallee Memorial Grade 9 Student of the Year award, which is based on academics, student involvement attitude, ability to get along with fellow students and teachers.

 

Other winners

Plaques for highest averages in Grade 9 went to Rebecca Roberts, Colby Chaisson and Kyle Barron. Top average plaques for Grade 10 went to Jillian Forsey, Michael Gilbert and Sonali Verma. Plaques for highest averages in Grade 11 were given to William Forsey, Jenny Thistle and Joshua White.

Winners of the Legion’s Poppy and Remembrance Poster and Literacy competition were announced. In the senior category, Sonali Verma won first place in the black and white poster contest; Brandon J. Hapgood, Stephen MacIsaac and Mark Murrin were respectively named first, second and third place winners in the poem category; and Lacie Hann, Jodi Pike and Erin Boyd were respectively named first, second and third place winners in the essay contest. In the intermediate category, Jordin Doman won first place in the poem category, while Katelyn Barker won second and Nicole Skinner placed third.

Sonali Verma won the Principal’s Award for Art for her artistic talents. A portrait she created was on display at the assembly.

Crystal Young received the Community Youth Network Recognition Award.

Winners of the Stephenville Lions Annual Senior Speak-out were announced, with Deveena Syan placing first, Bradley Aucoin coming in second and Megan Elliot placing third.

Savannah Bennett won first place in the Newfoundland and Labrador Law Day Association contest, while Jennee Brennan won second and Nicole Skinner placed third.

Four students were named Arts and Letters winners: Kelsie Benoit, George Power, Kyle Barron and Scotty Hann.

Sonali Verma was named Protective Areas Association Art Contest.

Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Commission radio ad winners were Jillian and William Forsey, while video ad winner was Sonali Verma.

Market Your Thoughts winners at the school level were Rebecca Roberts, Katelyn Barker and Colby Chaisson. Colby was also honored as a regional and provincial winner.

Myles Snooks and Crystal Young were honoured for perfect attendance.

 

Math and physics

In the Grade 9 Pascal Contest, Ben French won a gold medal for highest score in school and a certificate of distinction from University of Waterloo, a gold medal for highest score at Stephenville High, and a certificate of achievement from Western School Board. Kyle Barron won a silver medal from Stephenville High for scoring second highest at the school and a certificate of distinction from University of Waterloo.

In the Grade 10 Cayley Math Contest, Sonali Verma scored a gold medal for top school score and a certificate of distinction from University of Waterloo, and a gold medal from Stephenville High for top school score. Devon MacDonald won a silver medal from Stephenville High for second highest score at the school.

Zachary Thorne was honoured for placing in the top ten across the province after writing the Physics Prize Exam from the Canadian Association of Physicists.

 

Subject awards

The following students won citations for highest marks in English: Rebecca Roberts, Amanda Chubbs, Michael Gilbert, Steven Woods, Amber Hillier, Deveena Syan, Shelena Benoit, Angelisa Dennis and Brent Charran.

These students won awards for highest marks in math: Rebecca Roberts, Jillian Forsey, Sonali Verma, David Green, Whitney Hynes, Katelyn Foley, Dylan Walsh, Heather Alexander, Brent Charran and William Forsey.

The following students won citations for highest marks in science: Rebecca Roberts, Sonali Verma, Megan Weston-Jesso, Dylan Walsh, Erin Boyd, Niall Stewart, Katelyn Foley, Brent Charran, William Forsey and Jenny Thistle.

For music, the following students won highest mark awards: Rebecca Roberts, Sabrina Muise, Michael Gilbert, Niall Stewart, Lauren Henley, Alexandra Massie and Cameron Huxter.

These students won highest marks awards in art: Ian Duffenais, Colby Chaisson, Nicole Skinner, Kelsie Benoit, Sonali Verma, Jodi Pike and Erika Zenz.

Stephanie Bedo won an award for highest mark in American Sign Language.

Highest marks in French went to: Rebecca Roberts, Michael Gilbert, Anna Dennis, Jillian Forsey, Megan Elliot, Emily Alexander, Whitney Hynes, John Eckert, Brandon Hapgood and Jenny Thistle.

Highest marks in social studies went to: Rebecca Roberts, Jillian Forsey, Michael Gilbert, Lauren Henley, Jodi Pike, William Forsey, Joshua White, Jennifer O’Quinn, Brittany Jesso, Hannah Bennett, William Forsey and Myles Snooks.

Highest marks in industrial arts and other technologies went to: Colby Chaisson, Bree Besaw, Jevon Hawco and Hannah Bennett.

Students receiving first and second class honours were also announced at the ceremony.
