In an effort to mentor and provide activities for youth, as well as promoting environmental issues, a Green Team has been set up in the community of Flat Bay.
The Flat Bay Indian Band and Conservation Corps Newfoundland and Labrador have partnered to host the team, which consists of leader Cindy Kyle, Lynn Legge, Kelsey Gabriel, and Brittany Duffney.
The Green Team is assisting in this weekend’s Bay St. George Powwow by providing activities for youth, offering information on environmental issues, and running a recycling program.
The Team will also continue the youth mentorship program started in the community last summer. Youth will receive traditional Mi’kmaq teachings from community elders, be educated in proper environmental practices, and participate in a variety of other activities.
“The team is looking forward to an eventful summer,” said Ms. Kyle. “We can’t wait to get the ball rolling!”
The Green Team Program has been operating in the province since 1993, and has employed more than 1,900 youth in over 100 communities throughout the province since its inception.
