The Town of Stephenville has received $15,000 from the provincial government to assist with the development of a trail system in an area commonly known as ‘The Floodzone.’

Joan Burke, MHA for St. George’s-Stephenville East, said the funding was made available through the government’s Capital Grant Program.

She, along with Port au Port MHA Tony Cornect, Stephenville Mayor Tom O’Brien and Tourism, Culture and Recreation Minister Terry French toured the area Tuesday morning.

The mayor explained to Minister French how the area had been cleared of homes and other buildings destroyed in the 2005 flooding of Blanche Brook, but with clean-up crews leaving as many trees and foliage as possible intact.

Mayor O’Brien noted the money would be used to set up a walking trail, which will run around the perimeter of a park being developed in the flood zone area.

“We haven’t measured it, but it’s going to be a couple of kilometres,” said the mayor of the trail’s length.

He noted other future plans include tree planting and possibly a bandstand.

This project is among more than 50 community-based organizations, municipalities and recreation commissions that have received funding to upgrade their recreation and sport infrastructure through the provincial government’s latest Capital Grant Program investments.
