Cape St. George residents will have a smooth ice surface to skate on this winter.
The town received $15,000 from the provincial government last week to place a concrete foundation atop the town’s outdoor rink.
The site currently consists of a gravel bed, which Mayor Peter Fenwick said made for an uneven surface when covered with frozen water during the winter months.
Wayne Deaves, a town firefighter who helps with the town’s recreation projects, said the hope is to have the surface used year-round once the concrete base is in place.
“Besides skating and hockey in the winter, we’re going to try and use it for basketball and ball hockey in the summer,” he said. “We really want to make it a multi-use surface.”
He noted the town would like to eventually have a dome to cover the surface in order to prevent any melting of surface ice on sunny winter days.
The project’s funding comes from the province’s Capital Grant Program, which aids municipalities and recreation commissions in upgrading recreation and sport infrastructure.
