The Caribou Curling Club held a dinner and dance to celebrate their 40th anniversary on April 9.
Several former presidents and executive members were in attendance and those presidents who could not attend sent greetings.
Guest speaker at the event was Cec Stein, the original club engineer. He spoke of some of the challenges he encountered from changing the former American air force base bowling alley to the curling club.
Mr. Stein shared with attendees how the bowling alleys hard wood floors became the floor of the club and how it still stands today in perfect condition.
He also told the attendees how his mother, on a visit to Stephenville, named the club the Caribou Curling Club – and that Ed Skinner, an employee of Air Canada, donated the caribou head that is prominently displayed on the wall of the ice surface.
Theresa Ryan, the wife of the first president, was in attendance and said grace. Don Powell, the original treasurer, came from St. John’s to attend the event. Fred Stagg put together a written history of the club that was shared with everyone in attendance.
The original configuration of the club’s executive was Pat Ryan, president; Roy Bungay, vice president; Lillian Dingwell, secretary; Don Powell, treasurer; Vi Pinsent, membership chairperson; and Cec Stein, building chairman.
