A local darts team proved they could compete with the best in Canada after winning a national tournament.

The team – based out of the Royal Canadian Legion, Br. 35 in Stephenville – became the 2011 Dominion Darts Champions when they beat out Ontario in the third game of a best two out of three championship final.

To make it to the finals, they came out on top in round robin play against teams from across Canada at the tournament, which was held in Aurora, Ont.

The four-member team representing the province of Newfoundland and Labrador were Adam Bullen, Les Hulan, Brian Joy and Sam Organ.

Mr. Hulan said in the final their team got the first game and Ontario got the second, setting the stage for the final. Ontario got the jump on them in the final game with a lead of more than 200 points; however, back to back 140s by Mr. Joy and Mr. Bullen brought the score closer, leaving their team with a 122, while Ontario had 112 showing on the board.

Mr. Hulan scored 98, leaving 24 on the board for a double 12 for Organ.

In his first two darts, the Ontario player scored 80, leaving a double 16 and with his third dart tight against the outside of the wire on that double.

Mr. Organ got up and put the game away with his second dart to win the championship.

In addition to having their names engraved on a large permanent trophy, each was presented a plaque and a jacket.

Mr. Hulan said the hospitality in Aurora was super and they were shuttled around on a bus everywhere they wanted to go and treated great by their hosts.
