It’s time to get out the softball glove and practice swinging a few bats.
The Bay St. George Kinsmen Club is gearing up to host their second annual Slo-Pitch National Qualifier from July 15 to 17.
“The top two teams will qualify for the 2012 Canadian national championships,” said Troy Bennett, Kinsmen member and tournament co-organizer.
He said the event takes place in Stephenville and is for men only. Interested parties can enter a team of 10 or more players.
In preparation for the tournament, the Kinsmen held an umpire clinic in May. Five people participated in that event – Lawrence Bennett, Troy Bennett, Jack Constantine, Tony Miner, Heather Noseworthy and Corey Oliver – which was given by SPN regional director Jack Constantine. All five passed an examination to become certified SPN umpires.

In addition to seeing which team will make it to the nationals, the July tournament is also a fundraiser for local charities.
“Last year the qualifier was in aid of the Bay St. George Sick Children’s Foundation,” said Troy. “This year we’re doing it for Stephenville Minor Baseball and the local Boy Scouts organization.”

Slo-Pitch National is Canada's largest adult slo-pitch organization, whose national qualifying tournament program consists of regional, provincial and Canada-wide championships in two-dozen categories.
