Stephenville Minor Baseball’s Mosquito–Peewee house league is underway at Diamond A.

This is the first year for the house league since 2008, as registration numbers in the division have rebounded to 35 this year, up from just seven in 2009. Baseball registration overall is up 30 per cent this summer over last year.

In game one of the season, Blue Jays pitcher Ryan Kendall tossed four scoreless innings before his relief allowed 10 runs in the fifth. The Jays would lose 10-5 after leading 5-0 through most of the game as the Cardinals came alive with six straight hits including a triple by Dawson Drake and single by Evan Girardin.

In game two, Evan Rouzes took the mound for his Cardinals and was roughed up for five runs in the first inning. Meanwhile, his counterpart, Jays ace Kendall, limited the Cardinals to just two runs over two innings.

The Blue Jays would go on to win by a score of 20-5 thanks in large part to nine different players who recorded hits including Madison Marche and Mitchell Riberdy.

Cameron Lafitte pitched two innings to earn credit for the victory and pull his club into a tie for first place. Picking up hits in a losing effort were Cameron Caines, Clay King and brothers Jack and Matthew Bennett.

House league action continues every Tuesday and Thursday at 1 p.m. at Diamond A on Massachusetts Drive. Registration is still open, and new players are encouraged to sign up anytime from Monday to Friday at the field.

Minor Baseball is also actively seeking new volunteers to sit on the organization’s executive. The current executive has been reduced to just two members who have decided to walk away from their positions at the end of this summer after more than 10 years of service.

The current executive has decided that unless new volunteers come forward to take on the responsibility of running the organization, Stephenville Minor Baseball will be folding at the end of August.

Anyone who may be interested in lending their time can contact Bernadette Roberts at 643-5776 or visit www.stephenvillebaseball.piczo.com for more information.
