Rita Jane St. Croix has been prepping for a long-distance event at the 2011 Legion Canadian Youth Track and Field Championships.
But it’s not running or jumping that Rita has her goals set on. Rather, she’s hoping to score gold in race walking.
“You can’t take both feet off the ground at the same time,” said Rita Jane of the sporting event, noting there’s also a rule about not bending the knee once the related foot hits the ground.
She’s travelling with several other Bay St. George athletes for the games, taking place in Ottawa, Ont., from Aug. 3 to 9. They are Jillian Forsey, Michael Gilbert, Abigail Penton and Hannah Stokes. In addition, Jesse Byrne and Alysha Chaulk are also attending the games as alternates.
Coach Rosie Ryan said she expects the athletes to do their best and hopefully come home with some hardware from the national games.
The Royal Canadian Legion’s website states the championships provide an opportunity for young athletes to visit different parts of the country, meet and interact with athletes and coaches and to make them aware the Legion cares for them and their future.
