Whaleback skiers shine at provincial masters

A Seven Nation Army couldn't hold Jack White back this past weekend.

The Whaleback Nordic Ski Club member took home gold in the Masters 4 Men Free Technique race and silver in the Masters 4 Men Classic race at the 2012 Provincial Masters Cross-Country Ski Championships.

He won the free technique event on Sunday with a time of 45:49, outpacing second-place skier Bruce LeGrow of Whaleback (46:09) and Dudley Wheeler of New World Island Ski Club in Summeford (48:08).

White's time of 50.55 was second best in Saturday's classic event, a blink of an eye behind LeGrow's 50:34 and ahead of the third-place 56:18 time posted by Carter Powers of Whaleback.

In other free technique events Sunday, Mark Burt of Whaleback (43:26), Ralph Payne of Whaleback (45:17) and Darwin Cornett of Menihek (48:28) finished one-two-three in the Masters 2 Men Free Technique group.

Former world silver medal winner Al Parsons, of Menihek, captured first in the Masters 3 Free Technique race, crossing the line at 39:20. Brian Dunphy of Whaleback was second at 40:21, with Blow Me Down Trails skier Keith Payne finishing third with a time of 44:25. Judith Wheeler was the gold medalist in the Masters 4 Women Free Technique, ending up with a time of 50:41.

In other classic events on Saturday, Dunphy won the Masters 3 Men Classic with a time of 44:57. Blow Me Down's Paul Boland was second at 47:06, while Whaleback's Dave King placed third at 48:38.

Wheeler wound up with another gold medal in the Masters 4 Women Classic, with a time of 64:00.

Linda Cormier of Whaleback posted a 70:00 time to take the gold in the Masters 3 Women Classic.
