Week of excitement at Whaleback

Greg Noonan and Norma Chapman are two very active members of the Whaleback Nordic executive. Although they spend lots of time helping out and making sure that the club runs smoothly, they still manage to find time to take a daily tour of the trails.      Submitted photo

This will be another busy week at Whaleback as we prepare for two events this coming weekend.

On Saturday, Whaleback will be the site of the Provincial High School Championships with skiers coming in from schools throughout the province.

This year we will have participants coming down from Labrador City and it's always a special treat to share the trails with our Labrador friends.

The high school races are very exciting as the event features sprint, individual and relay races, so there will be lots of cheering going on around the chalet on Saturday.

Loppet on Sunday

On Sunday at 1:30 p.m., we will be hosting the 6th Annual Whaleback Loppet. The loppet is a mass participation event designed for all ages and abilities.

While some skiers will race around the course as fast as they can, most will complete their course of choice at a leisurely place and shout, “Yipppeee!” as they cross the finish line.

The only award given out at the loppet is a cookie, given to participants at the finish. Because we have skiers with a variety of abilities participating, we are offering four course lengths to choose from.

The 21 kilometre course will be a tour of all our trails, while the 10 kilometre course will be a scoot around the Snowy Owl and then you'll dodge on over to Abbey Road before heading back to the chalet finish line.

The 5.4 kilometre route will be a tour of Raven's Ridge, while the 2.5 kilometre course will be a loop of the Foxtrot.

The Whaleback Loppet is all about fun and fitness and Newfoundanders are a hearty breed who are well-steeped in recreating in the great outdoors. So come out and join us!

You don't have to be a member to take part in the loppet. The cost of registration is $10 per family, $5 for an adult and $3 for a youth. All funds raised will go towards our Trail Improvement Project, so all members are encouraged to come out and help raise funds to improve our trails.
